Expert Workshop on Methane and Black Carbon

January 24-25, 2011
SEMARNAT Auditorium, Av. Revolución

Objectives

The main goal of the workshop is to propose a strategic research program to INE/SEMARNAT with the following objectives:

  • To contribute to the knowledge on the characterization of the emissions and physicochemical transformations of methane and black carbon in the atmosphere.·
  • To reduce uncertainty in the estimated emission of key sources of methane and black carbon in Mexico.
  • To develop proposal of mitigation options for these key sources in Mexico.·
  • To identify and quantify associated co-benefits.
  • ·

Outline

  • Inaugural Session
–Current scientific understanding of methane and black carbon as short-lived climate forcers
–Emissions sources
–Mitigation options
–Co-benefits
  • Presentations from experts covering some of the most important emission sources of methane and black carbon in Mexico.
  • Discussion on research priorities
  • Panel of policy makers - mitigation strategies, implementation and challenges
