Technical Workshop on Science and Policy of Short-lived Climate Forcers

September 9-10, 2011, Mexico City

AGENDA (pdf)

SUMMARY (pdf)

Objectives of the Workshop

- To discuss the role of  Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCF) on near-term climate protection and clean air benefits;
- To identify emission sources and mitigation strategies of SLCFs that could be addressed at international, regional and local levels;
- To promote interaction, share best practices and facilitate future collaboration among the  interested partners in SLCFs;
- To discuss and develop plans for future activities, especially in the Latin American region.

Structure of the Workshop

The technical workshop is divided into five main sessions:

Session 1:  Challenges and opportunities for near-term climate protection and clean air benefits
 -  Integrating climate and air pollution policies through short-lived climate forcing agents.

Session 2:  Emissions sources and mitigation strategies implemented in selected regions
 -  Recent developments in science and policy in different emissions sectors; case studies implemented in selected region around the world.

Session 3:  Impacts of SLCF and co-benefits of mitigation
 -  Impacts on climate, human health, crop production, energy efficiency

Session 4:  International cooperation and financing mechanisms
 -  Cooperation and support mechanisms at regional and global scales available to assist national and regional implementation of mitigation options.

Session 5:  Panel discussion of leading international experts and national policy makers in the Latin American region
 -  What implementation options and mechanisms are available?
 -  How far will the different cultural and economic circumstances and governance structures of different countries require different approaches?
 -  How far are the necessary measures already being implemented in different areas, and how far could further implementation assist national priorities as well as contribute to international objectives?
 -  What sort of cooperation and support mechanisms at regional and global scales would assist national implementation in the region?
 -  What are the future research priorities to reduce uncertainties in taking action?
